Story Boards

We are studying clips of films of when a conversation takes place within a room and it shows them entering and talking. The clips must feature a number of different camera shots and angles which include match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

Here are 3 films i have watched, analysised and drawn into a story board as part of my research this has helped me get an understand of the structure of how things happen and take place and have given me many ideas for my film i need to make.

Matrix

The first film i watched was the matrix, the story board shows the stage of what happened in the clip we watch and the type of camera shots that were used and the order they were used in, and from watching them and analysising them i have got a better understanding of why the order they were used and the way each camera angle and camera shot can emphasis a scene in a film.

1- shows two characters waiting outside the door, talking and preparing the things they are going to say and their actions once they enter the room.
A establising shot is used to show us the viewer their surrounding and the environment they are in and also this shots helps us to understand they are having a converstation to each other, whereas if a different camera shot was used it could not be percevied in that way.

2- This shows them entering the room together. The camera show used is a master shot as it shows the surrounding of the features in the new room they have entered but as they get closer it becomes a amedium close up which shows they are getting closer to the boss, they have come to talk to.

3- This shows the character facing the window into the dark and stomry night, the master shot shows the objects and environemnt he is in and it has got a slight tilt to make him look big, so he big strong and powerful.

4- This is a medium/ close up shot of the character this is used to enthasis his power and strength compared to the other characters.

5- This is another medium shot of the two characters and it shows he is more superior to them as he has a camera to him self where when they are talking they are both pictured and no close ups of them are done.

6- This side on view of the characters shows one sitting down in a chair with the other character stand up to him, this shows he has more power to him and that he is the boss and makes all the decisions.

Terminator

The second film i analysised was the terminator this was similar to the matrix as it was him walking in through a door and having a conversation. He walks into the police station as he comes looking for a woman who is currently being held in the station for her safety from him.

In this film many different camera angles and shots are used to enthasis what is happening and the roles the characters have in the film.

The first one is an establishing shot to show the environemnt and that he is about to enter the room, we know from the scene before it is a police station. AS he walks throught the door, the character walks towards the camera which makes him getting bigger and bigger to shows his strength, power and also to show is is getting closer. Medium shot is used in the next scene to show the other character involved, this is a point of view shot, to show the main character is walking towards him and something is going to happen. In scene 4 and 5 a shot reverse shot is used to show the character who is talking and their conversattion so the viewer can understand what they are talking about and what could happen next? In the last scene we see the main character turning away and wlaking towards the exit door, here we get a close up of his face to show his power and his emotion after the conversation, here we see he is not happy with what the policeman said and has a plan of some sort.

Batman Begins

In Batman Beings the camera shots from the training fight are used very effectively, they are used to affect the viewer’s thoughts of the environment and fight.

Shot reverse shot is used at the beginning to give us an insight of both characters and to show what is being said by the characters, it is used to reverse the shot when they are in a conversation and when they exchange words. It is also used later within the swords fight to show them when there is a pause in the fight, and then there are loads of shot reverse shots which add to the effect of the fight with the quick camera shots of them hitting swords. There also is a scene where it is used to show the emotion on the two characters faces (Bruce Wayne and the Farmer), the farmer is to be killed for crime and we are able to see from the shot reverse shot the innocence of the farmer and Bruce’s thought and feelings towards him.

Master/Establishing shot is used when the fight first starts on the ice and this helps the viewer to understand where the fight is being placed and the environment they are in, it is then used in the middle of the fighting scene to show the trainers power and strength to the Bruce as it shows Bruce on the floor after being pushed on to the ice by his trainer. Also is used to conclude the fight and shows the trainer losing to Bruce but then the trainer cuts the ice so Bruce falls through the ice to another losing position, this camera angle has an effect on the fight and shows the trainer superiority to Bruce and that he has much to learn to become a better fighter.

Point of View is another camera shot used in the training scene to show the trainers power over Bruce as it shows him looking down to Bruce who is on the ice after being knocked down by the trainer and also Bruce point of view which is the opposite looking up to show Bruce is all most powerless to the trainer. This makes it look like it was done quickly from the spray left and the character sliding across the camera.

Pan is also used to show Bruce sliding across the ice to get to his sword that had been knocked out of his hand, this makes the viewer see the ice spraying up of the surface which is left by Bruce’s actions from sliding across the ice to get to his sword.
